Danny Wood sets out on a new path

Former New Kid on the Block Danny Wood's debut album, Second Face, is his first chance to show the world he's complete without Joey, Donnie, John and Jordan. He's not trying to revive the boy band. He'd rather you forget about NKOTB. He just wants one message to get through: Danny Wood can sing.
"Really, that's the reaction I strived to get," Mr. Wood said during a phone interview from Miami. "I did a radio interview this morning and the dude was like 'Man, they sent me this CD. I wanted to hate it, but I couldn't.' "
A down-to-earth and humble Mr. Wood was never the front man of the late-'80s pop group. Hiding in the background, he nurtured his soulful voice and insightful, spiritual songwriting abilities -- all of which are visible on Second Face's 14 tracks of pop/rock songs with an R&B twist and a touch of soul.
"I wasn't the lead singer of the group. I was in the background, and with this record that's all to my advantage," Mr. Wood said.
During the interview, Mr. Wood was listening to a mix of Let It Go, a song he was refining for Second Face (the song made it on the album as track No. 6).
"We, as Americans, in general let everything stress us out," Mr. Wood said of the inspiration for Let It Go. "Sometimes, the little things that are happening in life, you have to let them go and focus on what's important. Little arguments and stuff you have in relationships, it's like if you just would've let that go, it probably wouldn't have turned into a big argument."
The album's first single, When the Lights Go Out, is already gaining attention on the radio, even hitting No. 1 on a Tampa/Orlando radio station's Top 7 request show seven nights in a row.
The 32-year-old singer started writing songs for Second Face two years ago, finding inspiration from the loss of his mother; lost love; and artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Goo Goo Dolls and John Mayer.
"I had a lot to talk about, a lot of feelings inside that I wanted to get out," Mr. Wood said. "One of the first songs I wrote was Second Face, and that's basically about bad friendships -- friendships that went sour. And from there it just started pouring out of me -- the lyrics just started coming and coming. It's basically just venting; the whole record is just venting."
The track Second Face is about Mr. Wood's growth as a person and an artist. When his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the same time he was going through a custody suit for his son, Mr. Wood faced a turning point in his life.
"I went through a lot, especially the two years before I started writing this record," Mr. Wood said. "I went through one of those periods where you know if you survive it you're definitely stronger. It was a rough two years, but I came out of it learning a lot about life, being a dad, being strong and focusing."
Mr. Wood's mother passed away in September 1999 and inspired the album's first track, Home.
"I really took a lot of good things away from her passing," Mr. Wood said. "It was the toughest time of my life, but I learned so much about myself."
Mr. Wood isn't expecting to sell as many albums as the New Kids did. He just wants a second chance.
"I want people to give it a chance, to really listen to it and see what it's about," he said. "As long as I'm out there touring and making it happen and the response is good that's really all my expectations are."
